Ortiz: Gonzo reminds me of young Papi

May, 18, 2011
BOSTON -- David Ortiz is so impressed by Adrian Gonzalez, he said Gonzalez reminds him of himself, in his early incarnation as Big Papi.

“Gonzo’s a joke,'' Ortiz said Wednesday. "This guy makes the game look so easy, that’s why you guys are always talking [expletive], because of a guy like him. Gonzo is just, it’s impressive, man.”

Coming into Wednesday's game, the first baseman has a batting line of .349/.391/.794 in May, to go with 22 RBI and 8 home runs.

Ortiz laughed. “I mean, he reminds me of my younger days... If you look at the history of his career, he’s just a great hitter, man. One of those guys that comes to the game, you see a guy like that every 100 years.”

Asked where he thinks that might be coming from, Ortiz threw a question back at reporters.

“You ever met his dad? His father? Or his mom?” he said. “They have a lot to do with that. Telling you, this guy, man, is phenomenal.”
