Dice-K, Red Sox to discuss next steps

BOSTON -- Red Sox right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka, who went on the disabled list with right elbow sprain about two weeks ago, was examined in Los Angeles by noted orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona said after Tuesday night’s 10-7 loss to the White Sox that “there is nothing new diagnostically” to report on Matsuzaka’s condition.

Francona said that Dice-K would be flying back to Boston on Wednesday, but indicated it’s possible Matsuzaka wouldn’t be around during the day game the Red Sox and White Sox will be playing.

When he does arrive, Matsuzaka and the medical staff will meet to “go over everything and try to get a better handle on where to go, how to go and the timing of it,” said Francona without elaborating.

The type of injury Matsuzaka has could result in Tommy John ligament surgery if all else fails, but Francona has said that is not in the cards yet.
