Francona's a Bruins fan

BOSTON -- Red Sox manager Terry Francona showed up for his pregame briefing with the media wearing a Boston Bruins jersey.

Francona, who admits he is by no means a knowledgeable hockey fan, nevertheless was thrilled with the Bruins’ Stanley Cup victory, accomplished with a Game 7 win in Vancouver on Wednesday night.

“I think I’m what you would call a genuine front-running fan. [Pitcher Josh] Beckett got them [Bruins jerseys] for everyone, so I grabbed one,” said Francona, who was wearing jersey number 91, belonging to Marc Savard, a forward who missed most of the season because of concussion issues.

Francona kept tabs on the Bruins’ title run as best as possible, and left congratulatory messages for Bruins coach Claude Julien.

“I do think it’s really incredible," he said. "I’ve been here eight years. We have great fans. I hope the fans realize this [championships for each major Boston sports team since 2004] doesn’t happen all the time everywhere. It’s pretty incredible."

The Red Sox, meanwhile, have moved the starting time of Saturday’s game so it doesn’t interfere with the Bruins’ victory parade. Their scheduled day game against the Brewers will now be a 7:10 p.m. start.
