Lowrie coming along

August, 3, 2011
BOSTON—With Pawtucket having the night off, Red Sox shortstop Jed Lowrie broke up his rehab assignment with a day spent working out with the major-league team here Wednesday afternoon.

Lowrie played three innings at short for Pawtucket on Monday, then had three at-bats as a designated hitter Tuesday.

Given that he has missed six weeks with what the team called a strained left shoulder but upon further examination also showed some nerve damage, Lowrie acknowledged that it’s going to take a little time before he’s ready to return permanently.

His target date?

“Whenever I’m ready,’’ he said. “Whenever I know I’m ready to play nine innings every day.’’

Manager Terry Francona said the plan is for Lowrie to play short on Thursday, DH again on Friday, “get stretched out a little bit.’’

"You've got to make sure that you don't take any steps backward in the process," Lowrie said. "You want to progress at a natural rate."
