Henry responds to speculation on Theo

August, 24, 2011
BOSTON -- Red Sox owner John W. Henry responded Wednesday night to speculation raised by ESPN.com's Buster Olney that the Chicago Cubs might approach the Red Sox about GM Theo Epstein as part of their search for a new general manager.

Epstein is under contract with the Red Sox through at least next year, but Olney suggested the Cubs could offer Epstein the team presidency as an inducement to the Sox letting him out of his contract.

If a promotion is involved, ball clubs often -- but not always -- will grant permission to an employee to explore that opportunity.

"This kind of speculation happens from time to time on successful GMs and managers," Henry wrote in an e-mail.

"The Cubs have one of the best presidents in baseball. I think this shows how highly regarded Theo is by the media and baseball in general."
