Bowden up, Atchison down

August, 27, 2011
BOSTON--Designated yo-yo Scott Atchison, who gave the club three solid innings of relief in Friday night's 15-5 loss to the Oakland Athletics, was optioned back to Pawtucket, with Michael Bowden summoned to give the bullpen depth for Saturday's double-header against the Athletics.

Atchison has been called up and sent back five times this season. "He pitched so well last night, but he pitched long, so he goes back,'' said manager Terry Francona, who acknowledged there's no joy in the process for the manager, but it's "tougher on him.''

Atchison is expected back Sept. 1, when clubs can expand rosters.

Francona said he has set his pitching rotation for the Yankees, barring any weather issue Saturday night: It will be John Lackey, Josh Beckett and Saturday's starter, Jon Lester, which means both Andrew Miller and Tim Wakefield will be skipped. No surprise, given that the Sox have days off Sunday and Monday.

Here's the lineup:

Jacoby Ellsbury, cf
Marco Scutaro, ss
Adrian Gonzalez, 1b
Dustin Pedroia, 2b
David Ortiz, DH
Carl Crawford, lf
Josh Reddick, rf
Jason Varitek, c
Mike Aviles, 3b
Jon Lester, lhp

Aviles gets the start at third instead of Jed Lowrie, who struck out four times Friday night.
