Drew getting closer to return

September, 14, 2011
BOSTON -- It’s possible that Red Sox right fielder J.D. Drew (finger) could begin swinging a bat by the end of the week.

Drew was placed on the disabled list on July 20 due to an impingement in his left shoulder and was scheduled to be activated on Sept. 1 after a brief minor-league rehab assignment. During that stint, however, he suffered a small fracture on his right middle finger.

He threw from the outfield on Tuesday and it went well, according to manager Terry Francona.

“Between my shoulder and my finger, it feels like it’s been forever,” Drew said. “I want to get some at-bats in to prep for the postseason.”
