Tito still unsure who to pitch Monday

September, 16, 2011
BOSTON -- The Red Sox have a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday at Fenway Park and manager Terry Francona is still trying to figure out who his starting pitchers will be.

Veteran right-hander John Lackey will start one of the two games, but Francona hasn’t decided which pitcher will get the nod for the other game. Francona did announce that Kyle Weiland will start on Tuesday.

“I don’t think we can name somebody yet, because it depends on how we get there,” Francona said. “Certainly with the call-ups it’s not as critical that somebody goes six innings.”

In case anyone is thinking that reliever Alfredo Aceves will be that guy, think again. He’s too valuable in his current role.

“If you’re going to start him, and I don’t doubt that he would do really well, I think he could handle five innings and do pretty well,” said Francona. “But then you’re losing him for three days beforehand and three days after. Right now that doesn’t make us a better team.”

There’s still no update on lefty Erik Bedard, who has been bothered by a lat and knee injury and has only been able to play catch.
