Red Sox still unsure who will start Sunday

September, 21, 2011
BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox are still trying to figure out who their starting pitcher will be on Sunday against the New York Yankees.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Tuesday it would either be John Lackey or Erik Bedard, but that has now changed.

“Bedard is not a candidate,” Francona said. “That 50-pitch inning (Tuesday night) was pretty tough. He’ll probably come back on Tuesday. We’ve got to figure it out because we’ve got a few moving parts.”

If it’s not Lackey, it could also be reliever Alfredo Aceves who gets the nod. It’s also a possibility the Red Sox could look outside the organization and claim a pitcher off waivers for that one start.

The Red Sox have Jon Lester pitching Friday at New York followed by Tim Wakefield on Saturday.
