All eyes on Matsuzaka

March, 25, 2010
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- What does a football reporter do when he finds himself in the Red Sox clubhouse for the first time at spring training?

I was asking myself that question this morning as the Sox clubhouse opened at 8 a.m. and colleague Gordon Edes showed me the way inside.

Figuring that short guys usually stick together, the first player I approached was Tug Hulett, the 5-foot-10 infielder who probably will start the season at Triple-A Pawtucket but will be a quick ride up I-95 should the Red Sox need reinforcements.

We talked about his background in baseball, and how when he was scouted at Auburn, concerns about his size were prevalent among baseball folks.

I asked him what he thought my main story would be today.

“Probably going to be Daisuke [Matsuzaka], right?” he answered. “Took some swings the other day [with him on the mound] and his stuff was sharp.”

Matsuzaka is scheduled to face major league hitters for the first time this spring. He’ll enter today’s game against the Marlins after Tim Wakefield.

We'll have it covered here.
