Olney: Bobby has patron saint in Lucchino

November, 21, 2011

ESPN baseball analyst Buster Olney was on SportsCenter today talking about ESPN colleague Bobby Valentine's candidacy for the Red Sox managerial job. Ironically, Valentine was scheduled to provide such analysis, but had to cancel ... because he's interviewing with the Red Sox today.

"Bobby Valentine first off is someone who has a lot of passion with baseball and he definitely wants to manage," Olney says in the video above. "And he has a patron saint in their front office in president Larry Lucchino.

"One of the big questions heading out of the Theo Epstein era was who's going to hold the power in that organization? Is it going to be the new general manager Ben Cherington or is it going to be Larry Lucchino. The Red Sox went through an early process in terms of interviewing managerial candidates. Dale Sveum clearly was someone Ben Cherington would have wanted. He didn't get offered the job last week. The process was extended.

"Now Bobby comes in with Larry Lucchino sitting on his shoulder. i think that right now could make him the front-runner. He's meeting with Ben Cherington today. We'll see if he convinces him to offer him the job."
