An interesting tweet today from ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney, who handicaps the Andrew Bailey Derby as a two-horse race between the Red Sox and Rangers.

The Red Sox, who have made just one addition to the bullpen so far this offseason in Mark Melancon, have been interested in Bailey from the get-go. If the Red Sox pull it off, they would have taken a great stride toward strengthening the back of the pen and gained the flexibility to add Daniel Bard to the rotation.

The 27-year-old former rookie of the year has 75 saves and a 2.07 ERA in three seasons as the A’s closer, emerging as one of the best relievers in the AL. He’s eligible for arbitration for the first time this offseason. If the Sox deal for Bailey, he would be under the team’s control for the next three seasons before he can become a free agent.
