X-rays on Lowell's left knee negative

March, 26, 2010
FORT MYERS, Fla – X-rays on the bruised left knee of infielder Mike Lowell were negative, Red Sox manager Terry Francona said following the team’s 3-2 exhibition victory over the Blue Jays.

“He took a pretty good shot,” Francona said. “It was below the kneecap enough where it didn’t just get bone.”

Francona had planned to use Lowell as his designated hitter Saturday, but he now doesn’t think that is realistic. “He’s intact, but he’s going to be pretty sore,” Francona said.

Asked if Lowell will only be sidelined for a few days, Francona didn’t offer specifics. “You saw what I saw – it looked like it hurt. So we’ll keep an eye on him.”

When Francona was asked about possibly placing Lowell on the disabled list, he said he wasn’t at that point yet.

“We were trying to get him back to back games, and we got him in about six minutes. Let’s just kind of see how he shows up. You’re getting a little ahead of me.”
