Video: Valentine talks about Ortiz

February, 24, 2012
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A big topic so far during spring training has been the condition of Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz. colleague Gordon Edes wrote an in-depth column about Ortiz’s new diet. He weighed in at 258 pounds during his physical on Friday, which is considerably lower than his 275-pound playing weight from a season ago.

Gordon asked Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine his thoughts on Ortiz’s weight loss.

“I think he was heavier two months ago,” Valentine said.

Gordon then asked the manager if he put the fear of God into Ortiz to drop some weight when the two met during a charity event in December in the Dominican Republic.

“No. I had a margarita with him,” Valentine said with a laugh.
