Carl Crawford taking swings in cage

February, 25, 2012
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine, noting that Carl Crawford is already swinging in the batting cages, said he may have to revise his forecast on whether the left fielder will be ready for the season opener April 5 in Detroit.

Asked if the opener might now be a realistic target, Valentine said: "Talking to Carl, I wouldn't doubt many things. He seems very determined."

Crawford, who had surgery to repair his left wrist in early January, took 35 swings Saturday in the batting cages. He was swinging at "80 percent" capacity, Valentine said.

"I don't know how you actually do '80 percent,' personally," he added. "I know in quantity, 80 percent is 80 percent. I don't know about effort."

Valentine would not say when he expects to see Crawford taking swings with the other regulars on the field.

"Sooner than I thought originally, and hopefully not too soon that it sets him back," he said. "We're trying to make the time right."
