What Varitek has meant to Red Sox

Gordon Edes reflects on Jason Varitek's career in a Red Sox uniform in the retrospective video above. Here's Edes' tribute:

"No set of statistics can define Jason Varitek's impact on the Red Sox. He was a rock in the Red Sox lineup for a decade and a half. The captain. His ability to call a game won the complete trust of such great pitchers as Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett.

"He played through countless injuries without complaints, staying in the lineup even if it meant sacrificing his own numbers. His fierce dedication to win was probably epitomized by with that memorable glove rub in the face of Alex Rodriguez during the 2004 season.

"Like Carlton Fisk and Thurman Munson for an earlier generation, I believe that he and Jorge Posada, the Yankee catcher who also retired this winter, defined the Yankees-Sox rivalry for this generation."
