Sox work on relays, cutoffs at JetBlue

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The reason there’s a Fenway South is because the Boston Red Sox baseball operations staff wanted the new spring training facility to replicate for its players what it is like to play at Fenway Park in Boston.

For the last couple of weeks, all the drills and workouts have been conducted on the back fields of the player development complex, but Tuesday morning manager Bobby Valentine decided to have a full-squad workout on the field at JetBlue Park.

The team worked on cutoffs and relays.

The dimensions are exact to Fenway. The Green Monster here, however, is a bit different with seats in the middle of the wall, but Valentine said it would still challenge the left and center fielders in a similar way as the Mother Monster in Boston.

Also, former Red Sox right fielder Dwight Evans attended camp on Tuesday and was working in the cage with the minor leaguers in the afternoon. Valentine said he hopes to talk with Evans about playing right field at Fenway.
