Morning report: 10 from Texas, and 2 lineups

March, 2, 2012

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Good morning from the Fort, where a sign was posted in the Sox clubhouse Friday morning wishing Happy Texas Independence Day to the 10 Sox players born in Texas.

The 10 are: Matt Albers (Houston), Daniel Bard (Houston), Josh Beckett (Spring), Drake Britton (Waco), Clay Buchholz (Lumberton), John Lackey (Abilene), Kelly Shoppach (Fort Worth), Will Middlebrooks (Greenville), Carl Crawford (Houston), and Scott Atchison (Denton). Atchison is not on the 40-man, but because he’s been around long enough he was included.

For the record, David Ortiz tweeted out felicidades on Dominican Independence Day this past Monday. There are now just three Dominicans on the 40-man roster: Big Papi, pitcher Stolmy Pimentel and infielder Oscar Tejeda, the latter two ticketed to start the season in the minors.

The only state that comes close to the Texas contingent is California, which has six natives on the Sox 40-man: Bobby Jenks (Mission Hills), Ryan Lavarnway (Woodland Hills), Lars Anderson (Oakland), Adrian Gonzalez (San Diego), Dustin Pedroia (Woodland), Nick Punto (San Diego).

Here is how the rest of the country (and world) is represented on the Sox 40-man:

New Jersey (2): Andrew Bailey (Voorhees), Ryan Kalish (Shrewsbury)

Illinois (1): Michael Bowden (Winfield).

Florida (3): Andrew Miller (Gainesville), Luis Exposito (Miami), Jarrod Saltalamacchia (West Palm Beach)

Washington (1): Jon Lester (Tacoma)

Colorado (2): Mark Melancon (Wheat Ridge), Darnell McDonald (Fort Collins)

New Mexico (1): Cody Ross (Portales)

Idaho (1): Clayton Mortensen (Rexburg)

Ohio (2): Kevin Youkilis (Cincinnati), Chris Carpenter (Bryan)

Iowa (1): Ryan Sweeney (Cedar Rapids)

Oregon (1): Jacoby Ellsbury (Madras)

New York (1): Mike Aviles (New York)

Mexico (1): Alfredo Aceves (Sonora)

Japan (2): Daisuke Matsuzaka (Tokyo), Junichi Tazawa (Yokohama)

Venezuela (2): Felix Doubront (Carabobo), Franklin Morales (San Juan de los Morros)

Cuba (1): Jose Iglesias (Havana)

Taiwan (1): Che-Hsuan Lin (Hwa-Lian)

Mortensen, who came to the Sox from the Rockies in the Marco Scutaro deal, will become just the second Idaho to play for the Sox in club history, if can be trusted, which it almost always can.
