Valentine: Crawford not experiencing pain

March, 8, 2012
JUPITER, Fla. -- The Boston Red Sox brought a top-heavy lineup across the state for Thursday’s game with the world champion St. Louis Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium.

Left fielder Carl Crawford remained in Fort Myers, resting and treating his injured left wrist. It looks like a return to action won't be far off. Manager Bobby Valentine said he met with Crawford before the drive over and was encouraged.

“I saw Carl this morning,” Valentine said. “He said he felt very good. He’s not experiencing any pain. We’re going to all meet tomorrow morning and figure out a nice plan so he doesn’t overdo it on his way back.”

On Monday, Valentine said Crawford would be shut down for 5-7 days to alleviate inflammation in the wrist.

Other news and notes:

* Left-hander Andrew Miller was scheduled to pitch Wednesday but was scratched due to minor elbow stiffness. “[Miller] didn’t have pain today. He took a couple anti-inflammatories and a couple hours later he was feeling much better.” Valentine said Miller will throw a side session before returning to game action.

Valentine said he believed pitchers Andrew Bailey and Aaron Cook were scheduled to return soon. Bailey (strained lat) is scheduled to throw live batting practice Friday and tentatively, an inning against the Miami Marlins on Monday.

* Valentine made an allusion to his New York Mets days when asked about spring training cuts.

First, he said he’ll meet with general manager Ben Cherington “today or tomorrow” to decide when to trim the roster. Then, he recalled: “With other organizations, it used to revolve around payday,” Valentine said, referring not to salary, but to petty cash. “You know, like how long they’ve got meal money up until.

“Steve, you remember those days,” Valentine said, looking toward former Mets GM Steve Phillips, who was waiting to tape a radio interview with him. “Let’s make sure they don’t get this week’s [meal money] before we send them to the minor leagues.”
