Youk leaves game with leg contusion

April, 21, 2012
BOSTON -- Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis was taken out of the game with a left quadriceps contusion in the bottom of the fourth inning, replaced by pinch-hitter Nate Spears.

Youkilis was hit on the outside of the left knee with a pitch from David Phelps in the third inning. He gingerly went to first base and eventually scored from second on a two-out single to right by Mike Aviles.

He returned to his spot at third base for the top of the fourth, but when his turn came up in the batting order, Spears batted for him. Spears then took over at third base in the top of the fifth.

Youkilis also has been battling a groin issue, causing him to miss a game earlier in the week.
