Valentine: Bard available tonight

April, 25, 2012
Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said Wednesday afternoon that Daniel Bard would be available out of the bullpen for Wednesday’s season finale against the Minnesota Twins but was still making his scheduled start in Chicago on Friday.

As he has said since the rainout against the New York Yankees on Sunday night, Valentine again termed Bard’s bullpen stint “very temporary” in his weekly interview on Boston sports radio station WEEI.

“When we had the rainout and the off day combined I thought it was best to try to keep the other four guys as regular a rotation as possible and not move Jon (Lester) and Josh (Beckett) back seven days in between starts,” Valentine told WEEI. “I talked to Daniel about that and it was well received. Since it has been a while since he threw last, we wanted to keep a feel of the mound and said, 'Hey, what do you think about that situation in the bullpen if something arises?' He said, 'I can do that as long as it's not back-to-back days.'

“The offense allowed it not to be back-to-back days last night. He should be available tonight. I have not seen him yet today to confirm that situation, but today would be his day to throw in between starts."
