Bailey's bullpen session 'a big step'

June, 21, 2012
BOSTON -- Red Sox pitcher Andrew Bailey tossed a 25-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday at Fenway Park and he’s scheduled to throw another on Friday.

“I’m moving in the right direction,” he said Thursday afternoon.

It was the first time he’s thrown off a mound since injuring his thumb and needing surgery to repair a torn ligament during spring training. He “took it easy” and focused on his mechanics, throwing mainly fastballs and mixing in a few breaking balls.

“It’s obviously a big step,” Bailey said. “When I was in Florida I threw some on flat ground and it went well. Everything is progressing and I’m getting my arm ready.”

After he throws again on Friday he will be evaluated before it’s decided when he’ll work off the mound again.

“I definitely have the feel and the thumb feels great,” Bailey said. “It’s 100 percent and now I’m just getting my arm ready to get back in the swing of things.”
