An Eph gives this crowd some oomph

June, 27, 2012
BOSTON -- A celebrated football coach is in our midst Wednesday, though he probably won't get any preferential treatment from Amherst alum Ben Cherington.

Former Williams College coach Dick Farley, a 2006 inductee in the College Football Hall of Fame, is leading a tour of big-league parks for nearly two dozen Eph alums. This cannot pass unnoticed on, where our first two interns, Daniel Pesquera and Darren Hartwell, both came out of Williams.

Farley was an all-America defensive back and captain of the football team at Boston University, and played two seasons for the San Diego Chargers in their American Football League incarnation before entering coaching. He was head coach at Williams from 1987 to 2003, where his teams won nearly 85 percent of their games (114-19-3). He took over at a time when the Ephs had lost six straight to archrival Amherst, Cherington's alma mater. Under Farley, the Ephs went 14-2-1 against Amherst, a span that included Cherington's time there on the baseball team.
