Ortiz joins 400 home run club

July, 4, 2012
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz became the 49th player in baseball history to hit 400 home runs when he ripped a solo shot in the fourth inning Wednesday against the Oakland Athletics.

Ortiz is the eighth active player with 400 or more home runs and is the first to reach the mark since Paul Konerko joined the club in April, also doing it against Oakland.

Ortiz is the sixth player to hit his 400th home run in a Red Sox uniform and first since Manny Ramirez did so in 2005.

The homer was Ortiz’s first since June 27, and he went 25 at-bats between Nos. 399 and 400.

A’s right-hander A.J. Griffin became the 273rd pitcher to surrender a home run to Ortiz. It was Ortiz's eighth career home run at Oakland’s O.co Coliseum.
