Bobby V talks injuries, Sox-Yankees

July, 6, 2012

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine made his weekly appearance Friday on "The Michael Kay Show" on ESPN New York 98.7 FM.

Valentine weighed in on Dustin Pedroia's latest thumb injury, which caused the second baseman to land on the disabled list Friday.

"We hope to have him back in a couple weeks," Valentine said, even though Pedroia was spotted wearing a cast at Fenway Park on Friday.

Valentine also said third baseman Will Middlebrooks, who's been out with a sore hamstring, isn't quite ready to return to the starting lineup but would be available to pinch hit versus the Yankees.

Valentine said the Sox can't get discouraged by the flood of injuries that has afflicted the team, and provided updates on Ryan Sweeney, Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury, among others.

Other topics of note: Darnell McDonald's return to Fenway as a member of the Yankees, Josh Beckett's performance this season, the Sox's poor West Coast road trip (they went 2-5 in Seattle and Oakland, scoring just 14 runs total in the seven games) and more.
