Workhorse Atchison to DL; Tazawa up

July, 15, 2012
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- There was a new addition to the Red Sox bullpen Sunday. Right-hander Junichi Tazawa returned to the Sox when reliever Scott Atchison was placed on the 15-day disabled list with what is being described as tightness in his right forearm.

Tazawa was with the club for the last 12 days of April, and did not allow a run in five relief appearances, with four strikeouts, no walks and five hits allowed over 6 1/3 innings. He leads Triple-A relief qualifiers with an average of 11.91 strikeouts per 9 innings (56 K/42.1 IP) in 25 appearances for the PawSox this season, going 3-2 with four saves and a 2.55 ERA. He has not allowed an earned run in his last six outings, spanning 9 2/3 innings.

Atchison has pitched 46 innings out of the bullpen, second most in the AL, and has thrived in his role as middle man, posting a staff-best ERA of 1.76. He last pitched Friday night, giving up a hit and an unearned run in two-thirds of an inning.
