Wrap-up notes from Red Sox' loss

May, 12, 2010
BOSTON – Wrap-up thoughts following the Red Sox’ 3-2 loss to the Blue Jays at Fenway Park:

Strong homestand for J.D. Drew. Delivering an RBI double in the ninth, Drew finished 1 for 4, capping a solid homestand in which he batted .469 with 4 doubles, 7 RBI, 5 walks and 11 runs in 9 games. That raised Drew’s average from .214 to .284. “Just trying to create a rhythm, enjoy the game, and relax and square balls up,” Drew said before Wednesday’s game. “That was the goal all along. When you start getting hits, you build some confidence and kind of get things on a roll. It’s been working out well.”

Terry Francona’s first ejection of season. Francona was ejected for the first time this season, coming out of the dugout with two outs in the ninth inning to argue with plate umpire Dale Scott. After the game, David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia talked about their displeasure with the umps, but Francona wouldn’t go there. “What did you see?” Francona asked a reporter who solicited his comments on the umpires. When the reporter said that the called third strike to David Ortiz in the bottom of the ninth was well outside, Francona responded, “That’s what I saw.”

Mike Cameron eyes return for Yankees series. Cameron was in the clubhouse after the game and said there are tentative plans for him to return for the start of the Yankees series in New York next Monday. He now returns to Triple-A Pawtucket, where he is scheduled to play back to back days, one of which he’ll serve as the designated hitter.

Bunts. The Red Sox fall to 2-8 in day games, the worst mark in the majors this year. … The team posted a 7-3 record on its homestand and now hits the road for three games in Detroit and two in New York. … The loss snaps a five-game winning streak against Toronto. … Outfielder Darnell McDonald delivered a pinch-hit single in the eighth and is now 2 for 2 as a pinch-hitter this season, which doesn’t include a pinch-hit sacrifice bunt April 23 against the Orioles.
