Why Lowell?

May, 29, 2010
BOSTON –- Red Sox manager Terry Francona looked at the schedule and the quick turnaround with a day game following tonight’s game. Then he looked at the team’s numbers against Royals starter Zack Greinke and decided to give Kevin Youkilis the night off and use Mike Lowell at first base tonight.

Francona said he felt this was a good time to give Youkilis a rest, especially since he's 1-for-10 in his career off Greinke. Lowell, however, is hitting .571 (4-for-7) of the Kansas City starter.

“Mikey has done a really good job against Greinke,” Francona said. “Youk’s had a tough time. I don’t necessarily care a lot of time and Youk is such a good hitter, I just think try to take advantage of it. We’ve had so many late nights and it’s been such a grind and we have a day game tomorrow, we’ll just try to take advantage of it.”

This will be only the second time this season Lowell has played first base.
