Sox pick Vitek at No. 20

June, 7, 2010
The Red Sox picked Ball State second baseman/outfielder Kolbrin Vitek with their first pick (20th overall) in the Major League Baseball draft. The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder hit .361 with 17 home runs and 16 steals and won Mid-American Conference Player of the Year honors.

Mike Andrews of projects Vitek as an above-average major league bat who also shows plus potential in the contact department. He has average power, above-average speed, and is a smart baserunner. He is likely to play third base or center field as a professional, according to Andrews.

ESPN Insider Keith Law calls Vitek one of the best athletes in the college class this year.

There was talk that the Padres would take Vitek at No. 9 if pitcher Karsten Whitson wasn't available.
