Cash ready for return engagement

July, 2, 2010
Kevin Cash is coming back to Boston.

The Red Sox re-acquired the 32-year-old catcher from the Houston Astros in exchange for infielder Angel Sanchez. Cash played 19 games for the Astros this season and hit .204 with two home runs and four RBIs before being designated for assignment on June 22 and outrighted to Triple-A Round Rock.

It’s possible he will start for the Red Sox on Friday with knuckleballer Tim Wakefield on the mound.

This will be Cash’s second stint with the Red Sox. He played a total of 73 games during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. He earned a World Series ring in ’07 and became Wakefield’s personal catcher in ’08.

“I’m excited, very excited,” said Cash from his hotel room in Memphis, Tenn. “My time there was probably the most memorable time I have ever had in baseball. It was a lot of fun.”

Cash was in Memphis with the Express but wasn’t scheduled to play Thursday. He took batting practice and afterward participated in infield drills when the Astros’ assistant GM David Gottfried walked into the ballpark. Cash said he didn’t think much of it besides that it was a little odd that Gottfried would visit the team on the road.

When the team was finished with infield practice and returned to the clubhouse, Round Rock manager Marc Bombard summoned Cash into his office and told him he had been traded back to Boston.

“You don’t want to jump out of your seat with excitement that you get to go back to Boston in front of them because I enjoyed my time here also, but to get to come back there and play, and they’re right in the thick of things.”

Since Cash was informed of his return engagement to Boston, he’s already received text messages from Wakefield, Sox manager Terry Francona and second baseman Dustin Pedroia.

“Wake said congratulations and I said, ‘Here we go again.’ I’m looking forward to it,” Cash said.

Cash is scheduled to arrive in Boston around 1:30 p.m. so there will be no need for a police escort.
