Wakefield will throw Saturday

February, 19, 2010
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- For the 19th year, Tim Wakefield held a golf tournament and auction for the Space Coast Early Invention Center in his hometown of Melbourne, Fla., a facility that is a not-for-profit preschool for children with and without special needs. Bobby Orr was a guest this year, as was newly minted Hall of Famer Jim Rice. Ex-teammate Mike Stanley was among the players who showed up to golf.

Wakefield said the event raised $185,000. "I told people that it was nice to see every seat filled, even in these hard economic times.''

Wakefield, who underwent back surgery in the offseason, is back to playing golf and more importantly, pitching.

He said his physical exam went fine Friday and he will throw Saturday, and that at this stage there are no restrictions on his participation in camp.
