Pedroia, Varitek show significant healing

July, 30, 2010
BOSTON -- Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia (fractured left foot) and catcher Jason Varitek (fractured right foot) both had CT scans taken Friday and both showed “significant healing,” according to manager Terry Francona.

Pedroia was given permission to run, and he ran 10 to 12 times at 90 feet and also took ground balls. He also did a little running on the club’s recent road trip, but said he could feel some pain then.

"It’ll be important to see how he bounces back because the idea is certainly to build [strength],” Francona said. “We don’t want him to run out there for a couple of days and then get hurt. He’s gonna have to be real honest, because if it hurts, he needs to back off. If it doesn’t [hurt], they have no qualms with him continuing to progress.

“He felt good, so that’s good news,” added Francona.

Varitek is off the crutches and will be out of the walking boot Saturday.

“He’ll start doing as much of the activities he’ll be able to tolerate,” Francona said. “He’s still a bit away from playing, but both reports came back really good.”
