Varitek close to rehab assignment

August, 28, 2010
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek is progressing in the rehab and he’ll remain with the club for the remainder of this road trip and will be examined when the team returns to Boston at the end of the week, manager Terry Francona said on Saturday.

If he checks out fine, he’ll begin a minor league rehab assignment. Varitek has been able to do all the catching drills and has been able to run at a full sprint.

“I don’t think he feels like he has anything to do differently,” Francona explained. “He just needs to build up some stamina and endurance and then we’ll get him checked again.”

Varitek suffered a fractured right foot on July 1.
