Cy Young update

September, 15, 2010
SEATTLE -- The Cy Young picture, after Boston Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz allowed a run in seven innings in Wednesday's 5-1 win over the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field:

Buchholz's ERA is now 2.48, second in the league to Seattle's Felix Hernandez. King Felix's next start comes here Friday against the Texas Rangers.

Buchholz now has 16 wins, a total exceeded by only three AL pitchers: CC Sabathia (19), teammate Jon Lester (17) and David Price (17).

Buchholz, who did not allow a hit over the last four innings Wednesday, has now gone a dozen starts in which he has pitched seven innings or more, and 15 starts in which he has allowed no more than one earned run.

The Mariners, however, offer a boatload of numbers to support their guy.

We'll highlight just a couple:

Hernandez is the only AL pitcher to rank top 5 in innings (1st), strikeouts (1st), ERA (1st) and opponents' average.

In the more exotic sabermetrics categories, he ranks 1st among pitchers in WAR (Wins Above Replacement) at 5.2, and ranks no worse than fourth in seven other categories.

If Hernandez does not win, it will be because of his 11-11 won-loss record.
