Ortiz says there's nothing to report

November, 3, 2010
The Red Sox have until midnight Thursday to pick up the $12.5 million option on slugger David Ortiz, and while the sides were expected to talk this week, Ortiz just responded to a text message, saying there’s nothing to report.

While the Sox are expected to pick up the option, Ortiz has said he would like a multiyear deal. Either way, we'll know more within 24 hours, although the Sox exercising the option would not preclude the sides from continuing to discuss an extension.

Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, the Rangers said on Wednesday that they would not pick up a $9 million mutual option on Vladimir Guerrero, but are interested in re-signing the designated hitter. Guerrero, who was paid $5.5 million in 2010, hit .300 with 29 home runs and 115 RBIs this season. Ortiz hit .270 with 32 homers and 102 RBIs.
