Report: Buck near deal with Marlins

November, 16, 2010
ORLANDO -- Free-agent catcher John Buck, whom sources have identified as high on the Red Sox list as a potential replacement to Victor Martinez if he leaves, is reportedly on the verge of signing a three-year deal with the Florida Marlins.

Buck, who hit 20 home runs for Toronto last season, was perhaps the most attractive candidate on the free agent list after Martinez, who has attracted interest from seven to eight teams, according to a baseball source. Red Sox GM Theo Epstein insisted last week that the Sox “absolutely” want Martinez back, but to this point they have not made an aggressive bid to keep him.

As recently as earlier Tuesday afternoon, a baseball source said that the Red Sox were still in on Buck.
