Bring back Tek?

November, 23, 2010
Now that it appears the Boston Red Sox will be without the services of catcher Victor Martinez, who reportedly is about to sign a four-year deal worth $50 million with the Detroit Tigers, Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein has some decisions to make.

If anything, the timing of Martinez leaving could help because it’s still possible for the Red Sox to offer Jason Varitek arbitration before tonight’s deadline.

Here’s a quick scenario: The Red Sox know they will have to assume a risk at either the catching position or in the bullpen. Epstein and the Sox really like Jarrod Saltalamacchia and believe he has the ability to some day be the No. 1 catcher in Boston. So, what’s the best way to prepare him for that role?

Re-sign Varitek.

Instead of paying big bucks for a short-term solution behind the plate, have Saltalamacchia, who is making only $750,000 next season, as the starter under the watchful eye of Varitek.

Don’t count this scenario out for the Red Sox, especially with the catcher market dwindling.
