Gonzalez says he feels ahead of schedule

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Adrian Gonzalez addressed reporters this afternoon after his first workout at spring training. Here are a few notes from his comments (much more on this to come):

* Originally projected to start swinging a bat around March 1 after offseason shoulder surgery, Gonzalez told reporters he thought he was ahead of schedule and might be able to step back into the box sooner. However, he said, he wanted to wait for clearance from doctors before making any decisions.

* Gonzalez said the range of motion in the right shoulder was very good and he can presently perform every other baseball activity besides hitting. He played catch, shagged fly balls and took grounders at first base upon reporting for duty today.

* He said outfielder Mike Cameron offered him No. 23 -- which he wore in San Diego -- but Gonzalez declined, choosing to wear No. 28 because, in biblical numerology, that number is associated with strength.

* Gonzalez is the first starting position player to report for the Red Sox. The required reporting date for position players is Feb. 17.
