Predictions: Thanksgiving football picks

November, 26, 2009
OK, we'll get to the weekend games on Friday as usual. But since we've got a big college football game today, let's talk turkey and make some predictions. And just because it is Thanksgiving, we'll throw the NFL games in the mix too.

Texas at Texas A&M (7 p.m., ESPN): In working on the preview for this game, I didn't see too many statistical advantages for the Aggies. Kyle Field should certainly help Texas A&M, who could keep this close early. But Texas has too much at stake and too much talent. Colt McCoy throws a couple of TD passes in the second half and the Longhorns pull away. I think the Texas defense will contain the Aggies running game, making A&M one-dimensional. Prediction: Texas 38, Texas A&M 10

Green Bay at Detroit (11:30 a.m., Fox): The traditional Thanksgiving game in Detroit doesn't usually go the Lions' way. In fact, the Lions have lost the last five straight on Thanksgiving and all by large margins (the closest game was 11 points). And Green Bay needs this game at 6-4 and second -- by three games -- to Minnesota in the NFC North. Yes, the Lions beat the Packers on Thanksgiving 2003. That's not going to happen today. Prediction: Green Bay 35, Detroit 17

Oakland at Dallas (3:15 p.m., CBS): We all know how terrible the Cowboys' offense has looked lately. But something tells me Thanksgiving at Cowboys Stadium will get things back on track. I have no reason for that thinking, except that the offense just can't be this bad. It won't help if Jason Witten (sprained foot) can't go. Still, I think the Cowboys breakout and get this done. Prediction: Cowboys 31, Oakland 20

NY Giants at Denver (7:20 p.m., NFL Network): The Broncos are at home and in need of a win to end a four-game losing streak. The Giants are just as desperate. They got an overtime win over Atlanta last week to stay one game behind the Cowboys in the NFC East. So these two 6-4 teams should provide some entertainment. Even though it's on the road and a tough place to play, I'm taking Eli Manning and the Giants. Prediction: NY Giants 24, Denver 21
