Patterson to players: We can be No. 1

December, 7, 2009
TCU coach Gary Patterson's message to his team once Texas squeaked into the national title game: "You can still win the AP."

Since the Associated Press poll is no longer a part of the BCS, it can name a separate national champion. The precedent is there. The AP crowned USC No. 1 in 2003 even though LSU won the BCS national championship.

TCU enters the Fiesta Bowl ranked No. 4 in the BCS, but No. 3 in the AP behind No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Texas. Alabama received 58 first-place votes and Texas received two. TCU did not receive any first-place votes. So clearly, for TCU to have any chance of moving into the No. 1 slot, they'll have to rip Boise State and hope that Texas beats Alabama in a real sleeper. In that case, AP voters might be swayed to leap TCU to the top.

Realistically, there's probably a better chance of Mark Mangino taking first place in the next season of television's "The Biggest Loser."
