SMU: Young and improving

December, 11, 2009
The best part of SMU's journey to the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl this month is that the Mustangs are so young.

The team has 13 freshman or sophomore starters, that trails only Western Kentucky and Louisiana Tech (14) in the FBS. Think about that. The list includes quarterback Kyle Padron, who will only get better under June Jones' guidance.

It's why Jones talks about this team being ahead of schedule. He thought it would take another recruiting class or two to get that winning record and be competing for the Conference USA title, both of which they did this season.

The future is bright for SMU. And they'll get a stern test in Hawaii against Nevada. I don't think that's a bad thing, either. The Wolf Pack can run the ball and the Mustangs must do what they can to contain them. They'll face similiar tests next season and with so many returners, they can use this experience to get even better.
