SMU defense, RB come up big in 28-7 win

UNIVERSITY PARK, Texas -- A big defensive effort and the hard running Zach Line carried SMU to a 28-7 win over Alabama-Birmingham in the Conference-USA opener Saturday night at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

The only points allowed by the defense of SMU (1-1, 1-0) came as result of a Mustangs’ fumble early in the game that required UAB to go only nine yards.

Just before halftime, the SMU defense held the Blazers on three straight plays from the Mustangs 1 when UAB trailed only 14-7.

UAB missed another chance on the first series of the second half when receiver Fantrell Forrest was separated from the ball at the SMU goal line after a hit by Ryan Smith. The ball bounced through the end zone for a touchback. Forrest had burned the SMU secondary on a 50-yard pass play and was very close to a touchdown that could have tied the game, but a review verified the call.

Line rushed for 122 yards, his first game over 100 yards, and finished off two long touchdown drives in the first half with short runs.
