SMU has chance to make some history

December, 3, 2010
ORLANDO, Fla. -- As I sat in a theater Thursday night and watched "Pony Excess," part of the "30 for 30" series on ESPN that will air Dec. 11, I couldn't help thinking about how far the Mustangs have come.

And they take another huge step in Saturday's Conference USA championship game. They are the underdogs against a talented University of Central Florida team. But a team that overcame a 14-0 deficit on the road in a must-win game last week against East Carolina shouldn't be worried about the underdog label.

If SMU wins, it will clinch the program's first conference title since 1984. That was back when there still was a Southwest Conference (boy, do I miss that) and the Mustangs weren't yet the only school to receive the "death penalty" from the NCAA.

Stay tuned tomorrow for live in-game updates and stories from all of the action. But win or lose, the Mustangs continue to take important steps toward elevating the program. It might not be the Pony Express, but it sure is a long way from the losing seasons following the death penalty.
