"I'm excited," the 26-year-old Hernandez said.
Hernandez suffered the broken foot Sept. 18, when he fouled a ball off it while facing Tim Hudson. He hobbled around, but remained in the game for one more pitch, which he then took deep for a homer. Hernandez barely got around the bases because of the fracture.
Hernandez is out of options, and is not likely to crack the Opening Day roster, since Chin-lung Hu is slated to get the backup middle infield role.
Meanwhile, outfielder Jason Pridie is dealing with right hamstring tightness and has not appeared in a Grapefruit League game since Wednesday. Pridie said the issue is not alarming, but it bears watching since he was limited to 44 minor league games last season because of repeated strains of that hamstring.
"Just being cautious," Pridie said.
