FIU hopes to fill Marlins Park for Miami game

Hurricanes WR Thomas won't transfer to Illinois

Wide receiver Jeff Thomas announced on Tuesday night he's going to remain with the Miami Hurricanes after initially stating his intentions to transfer to Illinois.

Todd Hartley, a previous member of Georgia's coaching staff, has been hired as the team's tight ends coach. Hartley, a UGA graduate and native of Gray, Georgia.,had worked as Miami's special teams coordinator and tight ends coach under Mark Richt the previous three seasons.The Bulldogs are still searching for a defensive coordinator.

Alabama's Hurts visits Terps, Canes, Sooners

Crimson Tide QB Jalen Hurts, who is eligible to play elsewhere next season as a graduate transfer, visited the Terrapins on Friday and the Sooners and Hurricanes this weekend.

Alabama QB Jalen Hurts, who entered the transfer portal this week, is visiting Maryland and also plans to visit Miami this weekend, a source told ESPN. He's also expected to draw interest from Oklahoma. CaneSport.com was first to report the Miami visit. Miami hired former Alabama QB coach Dan Enos as its offensive coordinator today. Maryland coach Mike Locksley was Hurts' offensive coordinator at Alabama this past season.

Hearing that former Miami assistant Thomas Brown will join the South Carolina staff for the 2019 season. He spent the last three seasons with Miami as offensive coordinator and running backs coach. Brown also has coached running backs at Georgia, Wisconsin, Marshall and Chattanooga.

Miami officially announced Blake Baker as defensive coordinator, while Ephraim Banda will remain as co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach. Baker and Banda have longstanding ties with new Miami coach Manny Diaz. The three worked together at Texas in 2012, when Diaz was the defensive coordinator. Baker worked under Diaz at Louisiana Tech as well, and succeeded him as defensive coordinator there. Jonathan Patke (outside linebackers/special teams coordinator), Jess Simpson (defensive line) and Mike Rumph (cornerbacks) also remain on staff.

Miami defensive end Joe Jackson declared for the NFL Draft on Thursday, and that decision means the Hurricanes will have some rebuilding to do on the defensive line. With Gerald Willis also gone, Miami loses a combined 32.5 tackles for loss and 13 sacks. But there is good news: Miami returns Jon Garvin and Pat Bethel up front, and top linebacker Shaq Quarterman said he is returning to school.
