I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Edgar Martinez.

Back in 1999, not long before the Seattle Mariners moved into their new ballpark, I visited the Mariners' Kingdome clubhouse to ask the players what they thought about Safeco Field. I've always felt like an interloper when I'm in a clubhouse, and so it wasn't easy to approach Ken Griffey to ask for a comment.

Griffey, though, surrounded by attendants and having been given a gag order by management, blew me off. So with my tail between my legs, I looked around the mostly empty locker room for somebody else. Fortunately, Edgar Martinez was among the early arrivals that afternoon, and he didn't mind talking to me.
