Salaries absurd for minor-league coaches

Minor-league coaching is one area where too many organizations try to save money -- but they shouldn't. There's one word for the salaries many organizations are paying: ridiculous.

I was a minor-league pitching coach for the San Diego Padres for two years in 1996 and '97. The first year I made $15,000.

The second year I was offered a $1,000 increase, and the third year they offered the same amount of money when I became a roving instructor. I told them it would be better to take that money and spread it around, because there are lots of qualified baseball people out there who are capable of coaching but can't because of such low salaries.
