When it comes to the Giants and Omar Vizquel, I don't quite know where to begin.
I'll start here, though. According to the San Francisco Chronicle's Henry Schulman, "The Giants signed Deivi Cruz for 2005 on Nov. 3 but told him they would search for a long-term answer at short."
Yes, my feathered friends: Omar Vizquel, who turns 38 next April and was signed by the Giants to a three-year deal for more than $12 million (including a couple of deferred payments), is a "long-term answer." This is a bit like taking over as head of production at Paramount, and signing Sean Connery to an eight-picture deal. Or solving your daily 90-mile commute by restoring a Model T. Connery and the Model T were both wonderfully effective in their time, but there comes a point when you have to look reality squarely in the face.
