Report: Mechanical issue diverts Red Sox flight

The Red Sox's charter flight from Toronto to Houston was diverted to Detroit on Thursday night because of a mechanical issue, according to WCVB-TV in Boston.

The plane carrying the Red Sox, a Delta Boeing 757, took off from Toronto Pearson International Airport after Thursday's win against the Blue Jays and headed southwest before turning north, according to data from flight tracking website FlightAware. After a period of circling over southern Ontario, the flight continued on to Detroit Metro Airport, where it landed safely.

WCVB reported that the team was expected to board a new plane bound for Houston.

The Red Sox open a three-game series against the Astros starting at 8:10 p.m. ET on Friday.
