Red Sox's Pearce to start season on injured list

The 2018 World Series MVP will begin the season on the injured list. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Steve Pearce's spot at first base will be filled by right-hander Sam Travis.

Mariners prospect Filia suspended 100 games

Seattle outfielder Eric Filia, the Mariners' No. 22 prospect, has been suspended 100 games following a third positive drug test. Kansas City pitcher Jon Perrin and Boston pitcher Chase Shugart were suspended 50 games for positive drug tests.

Chris Sale, who is reportedly in talks to sign a 5-year, $145 million contract extension with Sox, was scheduled to start in his last Grapefruit League game today, but he was scratched. Dan Runzler will be on the mound instead.

Red Sox sign Sale to 5-year, $145M extension

Left-hander Chris Sale and the Boston Red Sox have signed a five-year contract extension. The $145 million deal also includes an opt-out after three years and a vesting sixth-year option worth at least $20 million, sources told ESPN.

Chris Sale and the Boston Red Sox are working toward a long-term contract extension. The Boston Globe first reported that the sides are getting close to a deal. If completed, the deal likely to be in the five-year, $150 million range, league sources tell ESPN - Jeff Passan
